Nestled in the heart of Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, Armitage Alehouse offers an exceptional gastropub experience that brilliantly marries upscale British and Indian influences with classic pub comfort. This is not your typical pub fare — here, every dish is crafted with care and layers of complex flavors, inviting you to savor something truly memorable.
Step inside and you’ll feel immediately transported, as if you’ve walked into an early 20th-century time capsule. The rich dark wood paneling and walls adorned with dozens of oil paintings create an intimate, warm atmosphere that feels both historic and welcoming. The tight quarters add to the charm, fostering a cozy, almost secretive ambience that diners rave about.
The menu at Armitage Alehouse reads like a love letter to distinctive, bold flavors. Start with their half dozen East Coast oysters, served with vibrant ocean brine, zesty cocktail sauce, and a delicate champagne mignonette — each oyster a fresh and briny delight. For something heartier, the Duck & Morel Pie and the Oxtail Pot Pie showcase comforting, rich stews encased in buttery crusts that melt in your mouth.
Meat lovers will find a true indulgence in the Wagyu Double Cheeseburger — tender, juicy, and perfectly cooked — or the English-Cut Prime Rib Sandwich, which boasts succulent prime rib, stacked generously on soft stonefired naan bread. The Curry selections, inspired by London style traditions, offer layers of spices balanced with the creamy naan, making every bite complex and satisfying.
Not to be missed is the Sticky Date Cake, a decadent dessert that’s sticky and sweet with deep caramel notes, perfectly paired with a cup of strong espresso or an expertly mixed Espresso Martini. The vibrant charred naan bread with choices of lively green chutney yogurt, whipped feta, or spiced lamb spreads also make for exceptional afternoon snacks, perfect for sharing with friends.
Armitage Alehouse thrives on genuine hospitality. Reviewers rave about the attentive, knowledgeable staff such as Sara, Leo, Alysa, and Declan, whose friendly professionalism enhances the entire dining experience. Whether you secure a reservation or arrive with a bit of luck, the service consistently feels thoughtful and personalized.
For those seeking a versatile spot that blends sophisticated plates with an approachable pub vibe, Armitage Alehouse is a standout. Its unique fusion of British comfort food with subtle Indian-inspired twists, combined with a classic, cozy setting, makes every visit feel like a special occasion. Bring your date, your friends, or your family — this place invites everyone to savor good food, share stories, and create lasting memories over remarkable dishes and perfectly poured cocktails.
This restaurant is really hard to get into but we got lucky and were able to get a res at 5:30 on a Sunday evening. We were sat within a few minutes of arriving. There’s really no room inside to wait. It’s tight quarters. The space is something else (in a great way). It’s like walking into a time warp back to the early 20th century. Dark wood everywhere, dozens of oil paintings in elaborate frames, dimmed lighting and period fixtures, Victorian table lamps lining the dark wood bar, textured wallpaper and a giant fireplace in the center of the dining room. The service was impeccable. We were greeted right after we were seated and gave our drink order. We ordered a Penicillin and the Mumbai Mule. Both were delicious. For appetizers we ordered the samosas and naan with whipped feta spread. Both were delicious but I could have made a meal out of the samosas alone. They were the best that I’ve ever had! For dinner we got a prime rib sandwich and wagyu double cheeseburger. My son and his partner ordered the curries. One had chicken and the other had shrimp. I wasn’t very impressed with the prime rib sandwich. The cheeseburger was also good but the real winner was the curries. I will definitely order it next time. If you are looking for a unique and delicious experience to try then this is an excellent choice. The ambiance is mesmerizing and the service was excellent. I also would like to try some of the other food options. Be aware, in case of food allergies, that the French fries are cooked in beef tallow and it is also in the pot pies. That said, the fries are delicious. As far as cost, be prepared for a higher price point than a typical tavern. There were four of us. We each had two cocktails, the table shared two apps and for dinner our entrees were two curries and two sandwiches. Our total before tip was $350.00
My favorite Hogsalt experience was here! My buddy and I came in for dinner. We sat in the back dining room. Gave a really cool, old dining room feel. Our server was fantastic, friendly, professional, knew the menu very well. Tried some cocktails which were all delicious. The bread, cheese and honey was a great starter. The Bone Marrow Chicken Pot Pie was awesome, the fried fish was good too but if you get heartburn easily (be careful with the vinegar). The sticky cake was also a favorite of the night. Great way to wrap up dinner! Overall, I'd recommend this place to any of my friends and family. If you can get a reservation, make sure you snag it because it's very difficult to get a reservation from my experiences. Great spot, will be back hopefully soon!
Divine! Bring your date, your besties, your momma. This place is just so so good. Wine, cocktails, pot pie, & entrees are all just lovely. Staff is marvelous. Sara, Leo, Alysa, Declan were all just lovely people. Thanks to Gavin for helping get me onto the same-day waitlist. I always love introducing people to Hogsalt. See you soon!
Everything we ordered was delicious! The way to go is to order a variety of food and share among friends. We did not have a reservation and waited for about 45 minutes to dine in. Outdoor seating was available but we passed on a 90+ degree day. This is a great local joint and I highly recommend this place. Service was amazing. We had a great hostess and knowing that we were sharing everything, burger was brought to us split in 4 portions already.
Our second time here. The food is amazing - upscale Indian-British pub food (with some other things). We split the Chicory, Mango, Paneer salad; the Steak & Ale Pot Pie*; the English Cut Prime Rib Sandwich; and the Sticky Date Cake (pictured). If you like prime rib sandwiches, this one was fantastic and was my favorite part of the meal. A friend said the Date Cake was the best thing he had ever eaten. I thought it was very good, but perhaps a bit too sweet for me so I can't agree with him. Service was excellent. We ate outside, which was simple. And preferred; the inside looks like an old English cave-turned-bar. Note the menu states they will ask you to pay a 3.25% surcharge, but you can ask to remove it. I'm not a fan of that; just include the price in your menu offering! It adds stress to people. * We ordered the Chicken Pot Pie, but received this one. Turns out it was delicious as well!
Very cozy and cute, excellent smash burger, amazing chicken pot pie. The hostess girl was a bit rude she could have had better communication and customer service skills considering location and price. We sat at the bar. But the negative first interaction didn’t matter at that point because the food was excellent and our server/bartender was GREAT. She was sweet, helpful, kind, funny, attentive, professional, and all the great qualities missing nowadays in customer service! Other wait staff was also very nice and attentive professional towards us! Burger came out fast and cooked to perfection! Amazing Wagyu beef patty! The garlic aioli was We walked in at an odd time on a random weekday, and it wasn’t busy at all! Def top 10 burgers in Chicago!
Armitage alehouse is one the best restaurants in the city. Stopped by a Sunday afternoon and scored a booth! I ordered the turmeric and tequila drink which is always incredible. My bae and I ordered a full smoked trout cedar salad, lamb confit pie, and sticky date cake w espresso martini! The staff were kind enough to split the espresso martini in two so we could share. So romantic, amazing food, amazing atmosphere/aesthetics. If there are no reservations available, just try walking in. I’m dying to try the duck and morel pie but I haven’t made it when they are avail.
Another classy tavern from the Hogsalt team. Managed to score a last-minute brunch reservation purely by luck. I fell in love with Au Cheval’s burgers during my last trip to Chicago, so I had to make a stop here. Both to test the burger lineage and to finally try that famous sticky date cake. The space was split into two distinct vibes. A front section with a bar and a few booths, and a main dining room in the back. With a reservation, we snagged a nice booth in the back, and the service was super friendly throughout the afternoon. The menu flirted between British tavern food and Indian dishes, so we kicked things off with the charred naan. We’d heard great things about it, and while it felt a bit heavy for a starter, the combo of spiced lamb and the yogurt dip was lovely. For mains, we split the wagyu burger and a pot pie. The burger had a really solid smash patty with just the right amount of grease and crispy lace edges, though I did wish they’d toasted the buns a bit more to give it some structure. The pot pie was satisfying, but not exactly what we imagined. They rotate fillings daily, and we opted for the Steak & Ale, which came looking impressive with a huge marrow bone jutting out. Conceptually cool, but since the pie filling was already soft, the marrow didn't add much noticeable flavor or textural contrast. It just felt a bit redundant. The sticky date cake, however, was flawless. Totally agree with the consensus that this is one of the best desserts in the city. Addictively deep brown butter aroma, a nutty base, and a complete sticky glaze to push it into full indulgence.
